Islamabad Launches Initiative to Combat Pollen Allergy by Removing Wild Mulberry Trees

Alongside tree removal, there will be restrictions on the sale of parthenium plants in flower shops across the capital.

In a decisive move to tackle the growing issue of pollen allergy in the federal capital, Islamabad, stakeholders have announced a comprehensive plan to remove approximately 80,000 to 100,000 wild mulberry trees.

This initiative follows directives from Prime Minister’s National Coordinator on Health, Dr Mukhtar Ahmed Bharat, who emphasized the need for proactive measures to safeguard public health.

Dr Bharat stated that environmental experts have identified wild mulberry trees as a significant source of pollen allergies due to their prevalence in the region. To mitigate these health concerns, the removal of these trees will be conducted in phases, aiming to significantly reduce allergenic pollen levels in the city.

In addition to tree removal, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has already planted one million eco-friendly trees as part of an allergy eradication strategy. This effort not only seeks to enhance the urban landscape but also aims to maintain ecological balance while addressing allergy-related health issues.

Furthermore, stakeholders will impose restrictions on the sale of parthenium plants in flower shops throughout Islamabad. Parthenium is known for its allergenic properties and controlling its distribution is expected to alleviate allergy risks for residents further.

“Parthenium, a type of toxic weed, is a major cause of respiratory allergies. The Directorate of Municipal Administration has been informed to enforce a strict ban on this plant in floral arrangements,” he explained.

The initiative comes in response to rising pollen counts that have led to increased hospital visits for allergy-related symptoms during peak seasons. By implementing these proactive measures, Islamabad aims to create a healthier environment for its residents while promoting sustainable urban development.
