Historic Display: Kiswa of Holy Kaaba Showcased at Islamic Arts Biennale in Jeddah

Running until May 25 at King Abdulaziz International Airport's Western Hajj Terminal, the display highlights the rich heritage of Islamic arts

For the first time in history, the sacred covering of the Holy Kaaba, known as the Kiswa, is being showcased outside Makkah at the Islamic Arts Biennale in Jeddah.

This unprecedented exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the intricate craftsmanship behind its creation, featuring hand-weaving and embroidery with gold and silver threads on silk fabric.

Running until May 25 at King Abdulaziz International Airport’s Western Hajj Terminal, the display highlights the rich heritage of Islamic arts and the centuries-old tradition of Kiswa-making.

Visitors can explore every meticulous step involved in crafting this revered cloth, from material selection to completion.

The event marks a significant moment for Saudi Arabia as it celebrates its role in preserving Islamic heritage while serving Muslims worldwide. The biennale coincides with the centenary celebration of King Abdulaziz Complex for Manufacturing Kiswah (Kiswah Factory), which has been producing these cloths since AH 1346 (1927).

By showcasing this iconic artefact alongside other historical Islamic pieces and contemporary artworks, organizers aim to foster a global appreciation for Islamic cultural heritage. The exhibition underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to promoting cross-cultural understanding through art and history.
