London Shines Bright for Ramadan: Third Consecutive Year of Festive Lights and Celebrations

The Ramadan lights were officially inaugurated by Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London

London has illuminated its streets for the third consecutive year to celebrate Ramadan, with a spectacular display of over 30,000 LED lights in the West End.

The event, organized by the Aziz Foundation, features lights inspired by Islamic geometric patterns and celestial symbols of Ramadan.

The lights will be on display from February 28 to March 29, and after Ramadan ends on March 30, they will transition to a “Happy Eid” message until April 6.

This year’s festivities also include an interactive light installation in Leicester Square, where visitors can press a button to send beams of light into the sky, symbolizing generosity and unity.

Additionally, an Iftar Food Trail offers discounts and specials at various restaurants across London.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla also participated in Ramadan celebrations by assisting in packing food donation boxes at a restaurant in Soho. They helped prepare biryani boxes for a charity and packaged dates for hospitals during Ramadan.

The Ramadan lights were officially inaugurated by Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, marking the beginning of the holy month, which is expected to start on Friday evening and continue until March 30.

Speaking at the event, Sadiq Khan said the tradition reflected London’s diversity and inclusivity.

“It is a matter of pride that we continue to install Ramadan lights, demonstrating our commitment to recognising all faiths,” he said.

He also addressed Islamophobia, stressing the need for engagement with local communities. “Some people spread misinformation about Muslims,” he said.

“We must show the true image of Islam, where people pray, give to charity, and even break their fast with non-Muslims.”
