Pakistan Welcomes Winter Solstice 2024: Longest Night of the Year Arrives

Following today, daylight hours will gradually increase

Pakistan will observe the longest night of the year today, December 21, 2024, coinciding with the winter solstice.

This astronomical event marks the moment when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted farthest away from the Sun, resulting in minimal daylight and extended nighttime hours.

The winter solstice occurs when the North Pole is tilted at approximately 23.5 degrees away from the Sun, leading to the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

On this day, regions like Pakistan will experience around 8 hours of daylight and approximately 16 hours of night.

On December 21, Sunday, in Islamabad, for instance, sunrise is at 7:09 am and sunset at 5:04 pm meanwhile in Karachi, sunrise will be at 7:13 am and sunset will be at 5:49 pm.

Following today, daylight hours will gradually increase, leading to longer days as spring approaches.

The winter solstice has been celebrated in various cultures as it signifies the gradual return of longer days following this point. As days lengthen post-solstice, it positively impacts daily activities and routines.
