Punjab Launches First Fully Electric Bus Service

The buses will run on a 21 km route

Punjab’s Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, on Friday inaugurated the province’s first fully electric bus service in Lahore, marking a significant advancement in eco-friendly public transport.

This initiative aims to modernize the public transport system while addressing environmental concerns and enhancing passenger comfort.

The service will initially operate with 27 electric buses, each designed to accommodate 30 seats and a total capacity of 80 passengers.

The buses will run on a 21 km route initially, from the Railway Station to Green Town, with an expected frequency of every 9 minutes. This route covers key areas such as Queens Road, Mozang, Ferozepur Road, and Ichhra Canal.

The service is projected to cater to approximately 17,000 passengers daily. A digital wallet and card system will also be introduced to facilitate cashless travel.

The electric buses are equipped with several modern amenities aimed at enhancing the passenger experience:

  • GPS Tracking: Allows passengers to track bus locations in real time.
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity: Ensures passengers can stay connected during their commute.
  • USB Charging Ports: Provides facilities for charging mobile devices.
  • Accessibility Features: Ramps for individuals with disabilities and reserved seating.
  • Safety Measures: Anti-slip flooring and CCTV cameras are installed to enhance passenger safety and prevent harassment.

In addition to the bus service, discussions are underway regarding the introduction of electric taxis in Punjab. The government plans to establish more charging stations and improve infrastructure at bus stops, including the installation of solar fans and water coolers.

The official launch of the electric bus service is set for mid-February 2025, showcasing Punjab’s commitment to sustainable urban transport solutions.
