#RippedJeans trending on social media for a non fashion reason

For the last couple of days, social media saw the Ripped Jeans being traded among the top topics.

Many would have assumed that its the latest summer trend, however, the reason behind the trend was non-fashion-related.

It all started with the remarks of the Chief Minister of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The newly appointed CM Tirath Singh Rawat had remarked that women wearing ripped jeans cannot provide the right environment at home for children.

CM was uncomfortable as he encountered the lady sitting next to him on a flight was wearing ripped jeans.

“Showing bare knees by wearing ripped jeans just to look like rich kids is the value given now which is just a race towards westernization when the Western world today is following us. Ripped jeans pave the way for societal breakdown and is a bad example parent set for children,” he had said.

The comments made by the CM drew massive backlash and are being termed as misogynistic remarks.

Bollywood veteran actress turned-politician Jaya Bachchan denounced Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat’s comments, saying this was the mindset that encouraged crimes against women.

The Samajwadi Party parliamentarian added, “Such statements don’t befit a Chief Minister”.

“Those in higher posts must think and make public statements. You say such things in today’s times, you will decide who’s cultured and who’s not based on clothes? It’s a bad mindset and encourages crimes against women,” Jaya Bachchan, a Rajya Sabha member, was quoted by news agency ANI.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday joined the outcry over new Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat’s comment

She posted photos of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in a tweet, saying, “Oh my God!!! Their knees are showing.” BJP leaders can be seen wearing white shirts and khaki shorts – the old uniform of the party’s ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

On Friday, Adnan Sami Khan took to Twitter to share his take on ‘Ripped Jeans’ row.

Several Bollywood celebrities including Kangana Ranaut, Gul Panag also joined the bandwagon over the issue using the hashtag #RippedJeansTwitter.

 

 

Meanwhile, social media saw a flood of pictures shared by women featuring them wearing ripped jeans.

And a few came out rooting, “Change your mentality before changing our clothes.”
