Sindh Enforces Ban on Plastic Water Bottles in Govt Offices

The Sindh government has taken the step to reduce the use of plastic and promote a clean environment.

The Sindh government has prohibited the use of plastic water bottles in all government offices and has recommended that officials use jugs and glasses for drinking water.

This decision was taken during a cabinet meeting, with the new guidelines intended to encourage environmentally friendly practices within government institutions, as stated in a notification.

According to the spokesperson for the provincial government, the ban is effective immediately and applies to all public offices in the province.

The Sindh government has taken the step to reduce the use of plastic and promote a clean environment.

The decision comes in response to concerns raised by the Sindh Chief Minister during a cabinet meeting regarding the environmental impact of disposing of plastic mineral water bottles.

The provincial cabinet agreed on the ban as a step towards reducing plastic waste and promoting environmental sustainability.

In June 2023, the federal cabinet approved the ‘Single-Use Plastics (Prohibition) Regulations 2023,’ aiming to combat littering and prevent harmful and carcinogenic plastic items from entering the market.

Globally, annual plastic production has surpassed a staggering 459.75 million tons, with a cumulative total of 9.5 billion tons produced by 2019.

In Pakistan alone, 3.3 million tons of plastic waste is generated annually, equivalent to the height of two K2 mountains.

Recognizing the urgent need to address plastic pollution, 175 nations collaborated at the United Nations Environment Assembly in 2022 to develop a binding international agreement to end plastic pollution by 2024
