University of Karachi Implements Dress Code to Foster Modesty on Campus

The issuance of these guidelines has sparked discussions among students.

The University of Karachi (KU) has recently implemented a new dress code aimed at promoting a respectful and modest appearance among students on campus.

The notification in this regard, dated January 14, 2025, was issued by Dr Nosheen Raza, the Students’ Adviser, and has garnered attention across various media platforms.

As per the notification, students are required to wear clean and modest clothing that reflects respect for the academic environment.

The guidelines explicitly prohibit:

    • Revealing or see-through clothing
    • Shorts, sleeveless, or tight-fitting garments
    • Clothing with offensive language or graphics
    • Casual slippers, such as flip-flops

Dr Nosheen Raza emphasized that this notification is part of a routine effort to guide students regarding discipline, especially with a significant influx of new admissions this academic year.

The university has over 45,000 enrolled students and aims to ensure that all are aware of the dress code outlined in its code of conduct.

Dr. Raza noted that such notifications are regularly issued to uphold decorum and discipline within the university setting.

The issuance of these guidelines has sparked discussions among students. While some appreciate the emphasis on maintaining a formal academic atmosphere, others view it as overly restrictive.
