Video Game Fornite Faces Lawsuit for Being Addictive

A Canadian class-action lawsuit has been filed against popular video game Fornite, in Quebec. The complainants on behalf of two teenage brothers have claimed that the makers of the video game have made it be addictive in similar ways like addiction to cocaine.

“The addiction to the Fortnite game has real consequences for the lives of players: several don´t eat or shower, and no longer socialize,” says the lawsuit. It further claims that addicted players are also seeking psychological help to cure addiction.

Fortnite is a product of US-based gaming company Epic Games that allows up to 100 individuals to fight together or in a team at a virtual battlefield. The game launched in 2017 is the most popular game of the time and currently has over 250 million players.

Jean-Philippe Caron, the attorney heading the lawsuit claimed that the makers of Fortnite involved psychologists in order to make the game more addictive and if the lawsuit proves to be successful, the makers will have to pay tens or hundreds of millions of dollars as compensation.

The Quebec court might take up to a year to gauge if the lawsuit is eligible for going forward.
