Ed Sheeran has been reportedly sued with a 100million dollars lawsuit for allegedly copying parts of Marvin Gaye’s 1973 classic “Let’s Get It On”, for his 2014 hit “Thinking Out Loud”. Meanwhile the album has sold over 15m copies, “Thinking Out Loud” reached No 1 in the UK chart and No 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
It is also being reported that the lawsuit filed in the Second US Circuit Court of Appeals in New York claims that the singer has allegedly copied, “the melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bass line, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation and looping”, for the single that appeared on ED Sheeran’s album X. Other defendants listed in the new claim include Sony/ATV Music Publishing, the Atlantic record label and Amy Wadge who has co-written the song. The lawsuit was filed by Structured Asset Sales, which owns part of the copyright for the song Gaye released in 1973.
Another lawsuit was filed against Sheeran as well. Marvin Gaye co-wrote the track Let’s Get It On alongside US singer Edward Townsend, who died in 2003. The heirs of Mr Townsend sued Ed in 2016, also claiming Thinking Out Loud copied Let’s Get It On.
It’s not the first time that Ed Sheeran is facing the legal action. Earlier this year he was sued by songwriters Sean Carey and Beau Golden, claiming that he copied one of their melodies for the 2017 single he wrote for Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, “The Rest of Our Life.”
