Taylor Swift Reflects on 9/11 During Her MTV VMAs Acceptance Speech

Taylor Swift once again dominated the MTV Video Music Awards, becoming the most decorated solo artist at the VMAs of all time

Taylor Swift and Post Malone took home the award for Best Collaboration for their song “Fortnight” at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night. During her acceptance speech, Swift acknowledged the September 11 terrorist attacks.

“Guys, I wanted to say, waking up this morning in New York on Sept. 11, I’ve just been thinking about what happened 23 years ago,” Swift said.

“Everyone who lost a loved one and everyone that we lost, and that is the most important thing about today — and everything that happens tonight falls behind that. But it is so amazing to have the opportunity to thank and honour the people who worked so hard with me on this video.”

Swift then addressed her collaborator, Post Malone, directly. “There’s a very obvious reason why Post Malone is everyone’s favourite collaborator in the music industry — you’re incredibly talented, versatile, and the most genuine person,” Swift said. “You’re honestly so consistently polite. It took me forever to get him to stop calling me ‘ma’am.'”

Taylor Swift once again dominated the MTV Video Music Awards, becoming the most decorated solo artist at the VMAs of all time after winning seven categories, including the night’s top award, video of the year.

Swift, who began the evening with the most nominations, concluded it by breaking Beyoncé’s solo artist record, securing her 30th VMA. Beyoncé has won 25 VMAs as a solo artist, two with Destiny’s Child and two with Jay-Z as the Carters.

Swift leads the VMAs with 12 nominations, including Artist of the Year. Following closely, Malone has 11 nominations, while Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, and Megan Thee Stallion each received seven nods. SZA has six, while LISA, Teddy Swims, and Olivia Rodrigo each earned four. Along with performances and awards, Katy Perry will be honoured with the MTV Video Vanguard Award and is set to perform a medley of her biggest hits.
