Two employees of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) are reported to have been arrested for allegedly leaking footage of a fatal midair collision to CNN.
The incident involved a Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines jet, resulting in the deaths of all 67 individuals on board both aircraft.
The crash occurred on January 29, 2025, when a Black Hawk helicopter collided with an American Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 jet over the Potomac River during a nighttime training mission. The incident marked a significant aviation disaster, being the deadliest in the U.S. since 2001.
The footage in question aired by CNN provided a harrowing view of the collision, showing the helicopter approaching the jet before impact. The videos were reportedly recorded on mobile phones and captured critical moments leading up to the crash.
The arrested individuals are Mohamed Lamine Mbengue, 21, from Rockville, Maryland, and Jonathan Savoy, 45, from Upper Marlboro, Maryland. They face charges of computer trespass for unauthorized copying of airport records.
Mbengue was arrested on January 31 and later released from detention. Savoy was charged on February 2 and also released on a summons. Both are accused of making unauthorized copies of MWAA records, although details about how the footage was obtained remain unclear.
As reported, the MWAA has not ruled out further charges against additional individuals as investigations continue into how the footage was leaked and whether any financial transactions occurred between the employees and CNN for the footage.
The agency is also involved in recovery operations for the wreckage from both aircraft as part of their ongoing response to this tragic event.
