Aga Khan IV to be buried in Egypt after the funeral held in Portugal

Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb attended the funeral ceremony of late Prince Karim al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV

Aga Khan IV, the late spiritual leader of the global Ismaili Muslim community, will be buried in Egypt on Sunday following a funeral ceremony held in Lisbon, Portugal.

The funeral of Aga Khan IV took place at the Ismaili Centre in Lisbon on Saturday and it was attended by family members, community leaders, leaders of the community, Portuguese government officials, and foreign dignitaries.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Spain’s former King Juan Carlos, Aga Khan University President Sulaiman Shahabuddin, and Habib Bank Limited Board of Directors Chairman Sultan Ali Allan were among the attendees at the ceremony.

Mawlana Shah Karim will be laid to rest at a private burial ceremony at the Aga Khan mausoleum in Aswan, the resting place of his father, Aga Khan III.

The burial site is part of a mausoleum for Shia leaders and holds historical importance for the Ismaili community.

Egypt was the seat of the Ismaili Fatimid dynasty, from which the Aga Khan claims descent.

Aga Khan IV passed away on Tuesday at the age of 88 after nearly seven decades as the spiritual leader.

Prince Rahim al-Hussaini Aga Khan V was named the 50th spiritual leader of the Ismaili community “following the unsealing of the Will of his late father, Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV.”

Pakistan has declared February 8 as a national day of mourning to coincide with his funeral ceremonies.
