Arson Attack on Auckland Mosque Under Investigation by Police

Emergency services were called to the mosque on Astley Ave in New Lynn at around 9am following a report of a fire

New Zealand police are currently investigating an arson attack that occurred at the Imam Reza Mosque in New Lynn, Auckland, early on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

The incident was confirmed as arson after CCTV footage revealed a person allegedly breaking into the mosque shortly before 1 AM and igniting the fire.

The fire smouldered for approximately eight hours before it was reported to emergency services around 9 AM, at this point, it had become visible from the street.

Detective Inspector Callum McNeill stated that police will increase their presence around other mosques in the area as part of their investigation and to ensure community safety in the wake of this incident.

This arson attack is part of a broader context of recent tensions involving places of worship, as highlighted by concurrent incidents affecting Hindu temples in Canada and Australia, which have drawn international concern.
