Aseefa Bhutto Zardari is the Only MNA to Refuse Monthly Salary

The monthly salary of a Member of the National Assembly (MNA) has now risen to Rs519,000.

Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, a prominent member of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and daughter of President Asif Ali Zardari and late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, is the only Member of the National Assembly (MNA) to refuse her monthly salary.

She was elected unopposed from NA-207 and has declined government pay since taking office last year.

In June 2024, just two months after her swearing-in, Aseefa announced that she would not be taking any salary or allowances.

Aseefa’s refusal to accept her salary highlights her dedication to serving without financial compensation. This move could be seen as an effort to connect with constituents on a deeper level by demonstrating that she prioritizes public service over personal benefits.

The monthly salary of a Member of the National Assembly (MNA) has now risen to Rs519,000.

According to National Assembly sources, this adjustment aligns with the salary structure of a federal secretary. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has signed the order approving the increase.

Under the new directive, following all deductions, the monthly salary and allowances of a federal secretary will also amount to Rs519,000.

Parliamentary sources disclosed that lawmakers had initially proposed a higher salary of Rs1 million per month, but Speaker Ayaz Sadiq rejected the request, finalizing the figure at Rs519,000.

With this revision, MNAs will receive benefits and privileges on par with federal secretaries, significantly enhancing their financial entitlements.

Notably, the National Assembly’s Finance Committee unanimously approved this raise, ensuring that the salaries and benefits of MNAs and senators match those of federal secretaries.
