Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Resigns: Unconfirmed reports claim she has fled the country
Following weeks of deadly protests, at least 91 people were killed and hundreds more injured Sunday
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is reported to have resigned on Monday days after the student organization announced a civil disobedience movement following weeks of deadly protests.
AFP quoted a source claiming that Sheikh Hasina left her Dhaka palace for a “safer place”; service providers say internet access is widely restricted.
Following her resignation, the army chief was set to address the nation.
However, there are different claims about Hasina’s whereabouts following her resignation.
Sky News reported Sheikh Hasina has flown to India on a military helicopter amid widespread protests which have seen the deaths of almost 300 people over the past month.
On the other hand, CNN News 18, citing inputs obtained by it, reported that Sheikh Hasina has fled to Finland.
The 76-year-old daughter of Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been prime minister since 2009. She also held the position between 1996 and 2001.
On Monday, the ramped-up security came as protest organizers launched a “March to Dhaka” that called Bangladeshis to take to the streets to force PM Hasina out of office.
On Sunday, at least 95 people, including at least 14 police officers, died in clashes in the capital, according to local news, while hundreds more were injured.
The deadly demonstrations started with students seeking to end a quota system for government jobs. Still, clashes with police and pro-government activists escalated into violence that left more than 200 dead last month.
