Section 144 Imposed to Clean Up Biohazardous Waste from Clifton Beach

Section 144 has been imposed in the Clifton beach area of Karachi to allow authorities to clean biohazardous waste. Earlier today, Shaniera Akram, wife of legendary cricket Wasim Akram posted images on Twitter of hazardous waste that has washed up the shore.

Open-needle syringes amongst other hospital waste were visible in the images. Anyone visiting the beach could have caught some disease and this was an alarming situation. Shaniera Akram called on authorities to take swift action.
The government responded and started the process of cleaning the beach. Senior Superintendent of Police in South Karachi also said that action will be taken against people or organizations dumping hazardous waste on the beach.
Shaneira Akram sent a series of tweets highlighting the stark problem.
There is kilometres of medical waste including hundreds of open needle syringes amongst other things, that has come in from the ocean. Why is the beach still open? For me,This is not a blame game this is a “we need to act now”problem & close the beach. I don’t want to be in this position but I have no choice peoples lives are at stake and I was faced with a moral obligation. People needed to know about this

I have stayed silent for too long. Every tv channel needs to be running this now. You have a duty of care to protect the lives of the people of Karachi and tell them Clifton beach, as it stands, is totally unsafe for anyone!

DO NOT go to the beach and try to clean it, this is biohazardous waste and needs to be a restricted area and cleaned by professionals. The sea and beach needs to be declared unsafe for everyone immediately

Later in the evening, a representative of Sindh government, Senator Murtaza Wahab claimed that 80% of the waste has been cleared.
