Biparjoy fast turning into a severe cyclonic storm, and on Thursday, it is reported to have further intensified in the past six hours!

Very severe cyclone BIPARJOY over the east-central Arabian Sea at 11.30 am today, 1210 km south of Karachi, would intensify further & move north-northwestwards.

At present, there is no threat to the coastal belt of Karachi and Balochistan from the storm.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the tropical cyclone Biparjoy in the Arabian Sea, which turned into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) has further intensified during the last 12 hours.

As per the latest alert issued by PMD, the storm has slowly tracked further north and northwestward in the said duration and currently “lies near Latitude 14.0°N & Longitude 66.2°E at a distance of about 1200 kilometers south of Karachi”.

The Met Department said that the maximum sustained surface winds are 120-140 km per hour and gusts of 160 km per hour around the center of the system.

“Due to favorable environmental conditions (sea surface temperature of 30-32°C, low vertical wind shear & upper-level divergence), the system is likely to intensify further and keep moving in the northwest direction,” PMD added.

The sea condition is very rough — “high and phenomenal” — around the system’s center with the maximum wave height ranging from 25 to 28 feet, it alert added.

MET Department’s cyclone warning center in Karachi is closely monitoring the system and will keep issuing updates accordingly.

On the other hand, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an advisory to all ports in Gujarat, instructing them to hoist the distant warning (DW II) signal as a deep depression in the Arabian Sea has transformed into a cyclonic storm named Biparjoy.
