Coronavirus: India is third worst-hit country with nearly 700,000 COVID-19 cases

India has become the world’s third worst-hit country with coronavirus, with nearly 700,000 reported cases.

According to the Indian Health ministry’s data, on Monday the country reported more than 23,000 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, which was down slightly from Sunday’s record increase of almost 25,000.

In India, the first COVID-19  case was detected in January and since then there have been almost 20,000 deaths recorded.

After passing Russia, India now trails only the United States and Brazil in the number of COVID-19 cases and it has recorded eight times as many cases like China, where the virus was first identified in late 2019.

Amid rising cases, the officials have reversed the decision to reopen the Taj Mahal, India’s most famous tourist attraction, in the city of Agra, on Monday, following a rise in new cases in the area.

Furthermore, some other monuments in and around the capital New Delhi opened on Monday, albeit with very few visitors.
