Italy has a record number of coronavirus-related deaths in a single day, with 793 deaths in 24 hours on Saturday.
This occurred the second day in a row of the biggest day-to-day increase in the country’s four-week epidemic, after surpassing China’s death toll on Thursday.
The numbers include 546 new deaths in Italy’s epicenter Lombardy region.
On Thursday, Italy had reported 627 deaths in a day related to COVID-19.
The total number of deaths in Italy has now reached 4,825, though the country is under complete lockdown.

Italy reported its first case of the novel coronavirus on January 31.
Italy, whose population is around 60 million, imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 10.
