Accountability court reserves verdict on Bushra Bibi’s plea in £190m acquittal case

The reserved verdict will be announced on September 5 (tomorrow).

An accountability court in Islamabad on Wednesday reserved its verdict on Bushra Bibi’s acquittal plea in a £190 million settlement case.

Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed Rana will announce the reserved verdict on Thursday, Sep 5.

Judge Nasir Javed Rana presided over the hearing at the makeshift courtroom set up in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, owing to security reasons on Wednesday.

PTI founder Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi appeared before the court during the hearing.

However, the cross-examination of the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) investigation officer did not take place because the PTI founder’s lawyer was absent.

Bushra’s lawyer, Usman Riaz Gul, presented arguments for her acquittal plea. The anti-corruption watchdog opposed the former first lady’s petition for acquittal in the case.

Following this, the judge ruled that a request to initiate contempt proceedings against the NAB chairman was “ineffective,” due to the arguments presented by both the prosecution and the defence regarding the acquittal plea.

The cross-examination of the final NAB witness, Investigating Officer Umar Nadeem, is scheduled for tomorrow.

The imprisoned former premier and his wife are accused of causing billions of rupees in losses to the national exchequer in a case that also involves a property tycoon.
