Donald Trump Named Time’s 2024 Person of the Year

The announcement was made by Time's editor-in-chief, Sam Jacobs, during an appearance on NBC's "Today" show.

Donald Trump has been named Time magazine’s “Person of the Year” for 2024, marking the second time he has received this honour, previously awarded in 2016 after his first presidential victory. This accolade recognizes his significant influence on global affairs and American politics over the past year.

The announcement was made by Time’s editor-in-chief, Sam Jacobs, during an appearance on NBC’s “Today” show. Jacobs noted that Trump had the most substantial impact on news in 2024, stating, “For better or for worse, he has reshaped the American electorate” and activated young male voters to support him in his recent election victory against Vice President Kamala Harris.

To commemorate this recognition, Trump rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on December 12, 2024. This event symbolizes his return to prominence in American politics following a tumultuous period marked by legal challenges and a historic election comeback.

Trump’s selection as Person of the Year comes amidst a backdrop of significant events, including his conviction on business fraud charges earlier in the year and his election win that makes him the oldest president in U.S. history. He is also noted as the first convicted felon to be elected president.

Trump was chosen over other notable finalists, including Kamala Harris, Elon Musk, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales.
