ECP declares Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain as PML-Q president

ECP has declared Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain as PML-Q president!

The development comes as a major legal victory for Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, as the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday declared the veteran political as the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q).

The electoral watchdog announced its verdict on a petition filed by the former prime minister amid an ongoing tussle with his cousin Parvez Elahi over the party leadership.

Pervez Elahi, the former chief minister of Punjab, had orchestrated the removal of Shujaat as party president.

A five-member bench of the ECP, headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, heard the petition.

In his argument, the counsel for Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain said a person ceased to be the party’s president only in two cases, either he quits or dies.

ECP had reserved its decision in August last year after Mr Hussain approached it when Parvez Elahi’s group had decided to remove him and General Secretary Tariq Bashir Cheema from the party’s top positions.

‘Fascist mindset defeated’, Marriyum Aurangzeb reacts

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb congratulated PML- Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and said that the fascist mindset that planned to remove Chaudhry Shujaat as the PML- Q President was defeated.

Reacting to the ECP’s decision, Marriyum Aurangzeb in a tweet said that the order of the Election Commission of Pakistan was a message that the decisions would be made in the light of the Constitution and the law, not in darkness.

The fascism of burning, demolishing, killing, picking up and throwing away was not imposed in the country now, she added.

In the recent turn of political events, the PML-Q got divided into two camps over the issue of joining hands with the PTI.

Parvez Elahi, his son Moonis and most of the party leaders sided with the PTI while Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Salik Hussain and Tariq Bashir Cheema supported the PDM.
