Eiffel Tower Evacuated on Christmas Eve Due to Fire in Elevator Shaft

Approximately 1,200 visitors were safely escorted out of the landmark

Paris, December 24, 2024 — The iconic Eiffel Tower was evacuated on Christmas Eve after a fire broke out in the elevator shaft, prompting swift action from emergency services. Approximately 1,200 visitors were safely escorted out of the landmark as firefighters responded to the situation.

The incident occurred around 10:50 AM local time when a fire alarm was triggered by an overheating device located near an elevator cable between the first and second floors. Although smoke and flames were not visible during the evacuation, safety protocols were immediately enacted to ensure the well-being of all guests.

Firefighters arrived promptly and managed to contain the fire quickly. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the evacuation was executed without incident. The Eiffel Tower, which attracts millions of tourists each year, was temporarily closed as safety checks were conducted.

This event highlights the ongoing challenges of maintaining such a historic structure, which has been a symbol of Paris since its completion in 1889. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the overheating device to prevent future incidents.

As preparations for the holiday season continue, officials expect the Eiffel Tower to reopen shortly, allowing visitors to once again enjoy breathtaking views of Paris from its observation decks.
