National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Thursday announced that the price of electricity will be increased if the power sector is not given the subsidy.
Chairman NEPRA, Tauseef Farooqui while addressing an online seminar said due to the government’s policy to not charge domestic consumers during the COVID-19 pandemic, the power distribution companies were under acute financial pressure amid limited commercial and industrial activities.
“Commercial and industrial activities are limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has reduced recoveries,” Farooqui said.
“The recoveries of some distribution companies have even dropped down to 40% in the past two months,” he added.
The NEPRA chairman said they would do anything for the consumers, but the government would have to decide on subsidy.
He said that under these circumstances, either the electricity tariff would be increased or the government would have to give subsidy.
