Indian #FarmersProtest gains global attention as Rihanna highlight farmers’ plight

The ongoing farmers’ protest in India has gained international attention as prominent western activists join Rihanna to highlight farmers’ plight on social media.

‘Why aren’t we talking about this’: Rihanna, an American pop star turned entrepreneur said in a tweet sharing a news article.

The news article shared the update that the authorities have suspended internet service in the neighboring districts of the capital New Delhi following clashes between farmers and police.

The ongoing protest by the farmers in the world’s largest democratic nation is continued for a record number of 69 days.

Protesting Indian farmers are making the mass revolt against controversial agricultural reforms a global talking point.

After Rihanna, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg posted a message in solidarity for protesting Indian farmers on Twitter.

Sayed Zulfiqar Bukhari, Special Assistant to Pakistani PM Imran Khan also endorsed Rihanna’s comments on social media.

Popular Canadia YouTuber Lilly Singh also tweeted in support of Rihanna.

The popular personality of Indian origin, in her tweet, said, “Yes! Thank you so much @rihanna. This is a humanity issue! #IStandWithFarmers and this narrative is TIRED.”

 

US lawyer and activist Meena Harris, the niece of Vice-President Kamala Harris, al shared her concerns over FarmerProtest. In a tweet she said:

 

Lebanese-American former pornographic actress Mia Khalifa also joined the bandwagon. She in her Instagram post shared a photo of women protesters with a comment, “What in the human rights violations is going on?! They cut the internet around New Delhi?! #FarmersProtest.”

Mia Khalifa on her official Twitter account also called out those who termed protesting farmers as paid actors.

 

Popular social media celebrity Amanda Cerny, who has over 25 million followers on Instagram, also shared a post voicing support for protesting women in India.

In her Instagram post, she said: “The world is watching. You don’t have to be Indian or Punjabi or South Asian to understand the issue. All you have to do is care about humanity. Always demand freedom of speech, freedom of the press, basic human and civil rights-equity and dignity for workers.”
