Fatima Bhutto Critiques Kamala Harris’ Stance on Gaza as a Betrayal of Feminism
Bhutto also criticized the Western response to the war in Ukraine compared to the Israeli assault on Gaza, calling it "total racism."
Fatima Bhutto, author and activist, expressed her disapproval of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris’ position on the Gaza conflict, labelling it an “absolute betrayal of feminism’.
In a recent interview on the independent news program Democracy Now, Bhutto’s comments come in stark contrast to Harris’ vocal support for abortion rights during her presidential campaign, raising questions about the consistency of her feminist principles.
Bhutto highlighted the tragic consequences of the ongoing violence in Gaza, noting that 70% of those killed are women and children, attributing this to U.S. military support for Israel.
She criticized Harris for focusing on abortion rights while seemingly neglecting the plight of vulnerable women in conflict zones.
“For Kamala Harris to come out and talk repeatedly about abortion — and I say this as someone who is pro-choice — was not just macabre, but it’s obscene,” Bhutto stated. She emphasized that true feminism should prioritize the protection and liberation of women, especially in their most vulnerable moments.
As the 2024 presidential election unfolds, the juxtaposition of Harris’ advocacy for reproductive rights against her foreign policy stance raises critical discussions about the broader implications of feminism in political discourse.
Bhutto’s remarks resonate with many who feel that feminist values should extend beyond domestic issues to encompass global human rights concerns.
Fatima Bhutto has shared a clip of the said interview on her Instagram handle with a caption saying: “I was speaking about Trump v Biden in regards to the world but if I was talking about the US would have pointed out their glaring similarities regarding those detention centres on the border, fascistic immigration policies, a coordinated crackdown on students (just Biden there), kow towing to Wall Street, abandoning the working class, insulting minorities, and sending billions upon billions to Ukraine and Israel while people at home have no debt relief, no break from student debt, no health care coverage and no relief whatsoever (Biden!)”

During the interview, Bhutto also criticized the Western response to the war in Ukraine compared to the Israeli assault on Gaza, calling it “total racism.”
She pointed out that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was being treated like a hero, with Ukrainian resistance to Russia’s invasion celebrated, while Palestinians were demonized as terrorists and dehumanized.
“Palestinians are dehumanized to such an extent,” she said. “We’ve seen that dehumanization from figures like Bill Clinton and Kamala Harris, who interrupted someone speaking out against the genocide by saying, ‘I am speaking.’ What’s more toxically masculine than that?”
Bhutto also condemned the heavy-handed response to protests at U.S. universities, where students spoke out against Israeli atrocities. She specifically mentioned her own alma mater, Barnard College, where the NYPD was called in and fired live ammunition at the students.
She emphasized that such a harsh reaction was not seen during protests against apartheid in South Africa or the Vietnam War.
