Former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee passes away at 93

Former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has passed away at the age of 93, as reported by Indian media.

According to a statement released by AIIMS Hospital Vajpayee breathed his last on Thursday at 5.05pm.

“Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated over the last 36 hours and he was put on life support systems. Despite the best of efforts, we lost him today,” read a press release by the hospital.

Vajpayee had been admitted to the AIIMS Hospital on June 11 with a kidney tract infection, urinary tract infection, low urine output and chest congestion. The former premier’s condition had worsened last night resulting in him being put on a life support system.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the first Indian prime minister from a non-Congress party to complete a full term in office. Current PM Modi terms Vajpayee’s death as an “end of an era.”

Condolences have been pouring in from all parts of the world and an emergency meeting has been called at the Indian Cabinet to decide the mourning procession.
