The judge, Gilbert Azibert, who was at the time a top appeals court magistrate, was allegedly offered a job in Monaco in exchange for the information.
Prosecutors added that Sarkozy who led France from 2007 to 2012, made the job offer through his attorney, Thierry Herzog, who was a co-defendant in the trial, as was judge Gilbert Azibert.
The Judge in its ruling said that Sarkozy could serve a year at home with an electronic tag, rather than go to prison.
The guilty verdict against Sarkozy makes him the second former French president in recent years to be convicted of corruption.
Ralrier his predecessor, Jacques Chirac, was also convicted in 2011.
