Gun attack on a convoy of passenger vehicles in Khurrum leaves at least 38 people killed

The incident comes amid a sharp uptick in the number of terrorist attacks in Balochistan and KP.

A Gun attack on a convoy of passenger vehicles in the Khurrum district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday has left at least 38 people killed, including women and children.

According to the police, assailants opened fire on a passenger vehicles convoy travelling from Parachinar to Peshawar, in the Ochat area of the Kurram district.

As reported, the gunmen targeted the convoy from surrounding hills, hitting several vehicles with automatic gunfire.

Earlier, Dr Muhammad Ishaq, the Medical Superintendent of Tehsil Head Quarters (THQ) Hospital Alizai, reported that 33 people had been killed and 30 others injured. He added that the injured were being transferred to various hospitals within the district, with some sent to Peshawar for treatment.

KP Chief Secretary Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry told Reuters that “the death toll is likely to increase.”

As reported, the provincial government has sent in extra security forces to the area, and officials have confirmed that a perimeter has been set up around Ochut as search operations for the attackers continue.

President Asif Ali Zardari in a statement, strongly condemned the incident and expressed his condolences to the bereaved of the deceased.

“Attacking innocent passengers is a cowardly and inhumane act,” he was quoted as saying in a post on X by PPP’s media cell.

He added that those responsible for the incident should be punished. He urged that timely medical aid be provided to the injured.

KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur took strict notice of the incident and also condemned it.

He directed a delegation comprising the chief secretary, provincial law minister and the area’s MNA and MPA to visit Kurram immediately.
