Heatstroke Cases Surge in Punjab as Temperatures Soar Above 45°C

Lahore has reported the highest number of cases, with 29 patients admitted to Outpatient Departments (OPDs)

Heatstroke cases have risen significantly across Punjab due to soaring temperatures amid an ongoing severe heatwave.

Between June 1 and June 10, a total of 67 heatstroke patients received medical treatment at government hospitals in Punjab, with Lahore reporting the highest number of cases at 29, followed by Bahawalpur with 26 cases.

The heatwave has pushed temperatures well above seasonal norms, with several cities in Punjab experiencing temperatures ranging from 45°C to as high as 50°C in some areas like Bhakkar.

Health authorities have issued warnings and advisories urging the public to avoid outdoor activities between 11 am and 4 pm, increase water intake, and protect themselves from direct sunlight by covering their heads.

Hospitals have activated dedicated heatstroke counters and stocked essential medicines to manage the rising patient load.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also issued a weather advisory forecasting intense heat in Punjab from June 13 to 16, emphasising precautionary measures to protect vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with health conditions.

The heatwave is expected to persist, with temperatures remaining 4 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal, particularly affecting southern Punjab and urban centres.

Medical experts continue to advise hydration, minimising sun exposure, and awareness of heatstroke symptoms to prevent severe health outcomes.
