Hematologist Dr. Tahir Shamsi passed away in Karachi on Tuesday.
Dr. Tahir Shamsi, renowned hematologist and pioneer of a bone marrow transplant, had been admitted to the hospital after he suffered a brain hemorrhage last week.
As being reported, he had been undergoing treatment but his condition worsened on Thursday.
Dr. Shamsi was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital where he breathed his last today.
Dr. Shamsi is regarded as the pioneer to introduce bone-marrow transplants in Pakistan in 1996.
He performed 650 bone-marrow transplants and wrote over 100 research articles.
Dr. Shamsi came up with the idea of treating COVID-19 patients using the plasma of those who recovered from the virus, during the first wave of coronavirus.
In 2011, Dr. Shamsi had established the National Institute for Blood Disease for the treatment of blood-related diseases.
In 2016, the Dow Graduates Association of North America honoured him with a lifetime achievement award in recognition of his services.
