Hosni Mubarak, Former Egyptian President, dies aged 91

Hosni Mubarak, former Egyptian President passes away at the age of 91 years in Cairo on Tuesday.

Mubarak’s death was confirmed by Egyptian state news. Earlier on Tuesday, the Al-Watan website reported that he died at a military hospital.

Earlier on Saturday, his son Alaa said that Mubarak remained in intensive care after undergoing surgery in late January.

Hosni was ousted by the Military in 2011, after spending three decades in the office before a popular uprising swept Egypt.

In May 2011 Mubarak and his sons, Alaa and Gamal, were called to trial on charges of killing of protestors and corruption charges.

On August 19, 2013, Mubarak was acquitted of one of his corruption charges and two days later the court ordered his release from prison.

He was born in 1928 and entered the air force as a teenager and went on to play a key role in the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.

Last year in October Mubarak appeared in a 25-minute video that was uploaded to a YouTube channel named “Mubarak Archives”, in which he spoke about his memories of the 1973 Arab-Israeli War.

Before becoming president, Mubarak was a commander in the Egyptian Air Force from 1972-1975.

Mubarak assumed presidency less than a decade later, following the assassination of former President Anwar Sadat,  whom he served as vice-president.

He also played a key role in the Israel-Palestinian peace process.

As he was in power during, unemployment, poverty, and corruption continued to grow in Egypt.

The condition of discontent boiled over in January 2011,  termed as Arab Spring in the region and similar protests in Tunisia managed to the overthrow of the country’s president.

Hence, the Mubarak was forced to step down 18 days later on February 11, 2011, as a result of the January 25 Revolution.
