Islamabad High Court Suspends Journalist Matiullah Jan’s Physical Remand
Jan was booked in the case after reportedly being detained in Islamabad on Wednesday night.
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday suspended the two-day physical remand of senior journalist Matiullah Jan, which was previously granted by an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC).
This decision was made following a petition filed by Jan’s legal counsel, Imaan Mazari, challenging the remand order.
Matiullah Jan was arrested at an E-9 checkpoint in Islamabad for alleged involvement in a case that includes charges of attempted murder, assault on police officers, and possession of narcotics.
The police had initially sought a 30-day remand, but the ATC approved only two days.
During the court proceedings, it was argued that the First Information Report (FIR) lacked evidence supporting the drug-related allegations against Jan.
The IHC’s ruling directs that Jan be considered under judicial custody instead of physical remand. This development has sparked widespread reactions from media and human rights organizations, as well as political figures who have criticized the charges against him as unfounded and politically motivated.
