Imran Khan ‘calls off’ talks with govt

"The founder of PTI has categorically announced that no further rounds of negotiations will take place," Gohar said.

Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), on Thursday officially called off negotiations with the Pakistani government due to its failure to establish judicial commissions within a specified seven-day period.

This decision was announced by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan after a meeting with Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned for over a year.

Speaking to the media outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, Barrister Gohar said that the party’s legal team, including himself, met Khan earlier in the day.

Gohar stated that Khan expressed frustration over the government’s inaction, which he deemed sufficient reason to terminate the talks.

The negotiations aimed to address political tensions in Pakistan, particularly following Khan’s conviction in a corruption case. The PTI had presented a charter of demands during the third round of talks on January 16, which included the formation of two judicial commissions to investigate violent protests on May 9, 2023, and November 26, 2024. The government had promised a response within seven days but failed to deliver.

Gohar Khan emphasized that without the establishment of these commissions, further discussions were pointless, reflecting a broader sentiment within PTI regarding governmental non-cooperation.

“We will continue our struggle in accordance with the Constitution and the law,” remarked the PTI chairman, adding that efforts would be made against an independent judiciary and the 26th Amendment.

“We will initiate a movement in collaboration with all political parties,” he added. Barrister Gohar further conveyed the remarks of Khan, saying: “As of today, the commission was supposed to be announced, but it has not been.”

He further quoted the PTI founder as saying: “We are not waiting for assistance from any foreign country.”

The next scheduled meeting between PTI and the government was set for January 28, but it now appears uncertain following this latest announcement.
