India mourns the loss of Ratan Tata, the iconic business tycoon and former chairman of Tata Sons, who passed away at the age of 86. His contributions to the Indian economy and society are immeasurable, leaving an indelible mark on the business landscape.

Ratan Tata, a former chairman of Indian conglomerate Tata Sons, died at a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday night.

Hundreds gather to pay last respects to India’s iconic business tycoon Hundreds of people, including corporate leaders, politicians and celebrities, gathered in Mumbai on Thursday to pay their last respects to Ratan Tata.

Ratan Tata’s body draped in the Indian flag was kept at a cultural centre in Mumbai, and his funeral was conducted later in the day with full state honours at Worli crematorium in Mumbai.

Born on December 28, 1937, Ratan Tata took the helm of the Tata Group in 1991, guiding it through a period of remarkable growth and globalization. Under his leadership, the group expanded its footprint across various sectors, from automobiles to steel, and made significant acquisitions like Jaguar Land Rover and Corus Steel.

The Tata Group is one of India’s largest companies, with annual revenues of over $100bn (£76.5bn).

Ratan Tata was not only a visionary businessman but also a champion of corporate social responsibility. He firmly believed that businesses should prioritize the welfare of society. His commitment to philanthropy saw a substantial portion of Tata Group’s profits directed toward education, healthcare, and rural development initiatives.

Known for his humility and integrity, Tata inspired countless entrepreneurs and business leaders. His emphasis on innovation led to the development of the Tata Nano, a revolutionary attempt to provide affordable transportation to millions.

In a statement announcing Tata’s death, the current chairman of Tata Sons described him as a “truly uncommon leader”.

Natarajan Chandrasekaran added: “On behalf of the entire Tata family, I extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones.

“His legacy will continue to inspire us as we strive to uphold the principles he so passionately championed.”
