Iran Grants Medical Leave to Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi
This temporary release was granted based on medical advice regarding her deteriorating health condition
Iran has released Nobel Peace laureate Narges Mohammadi on medical leave for three weeks, following her recent surgery.
Mohammadi, who has been imprisoned since November 2021, underwent a procedure to remove a benign tumour and address other health issues, including arthritis and complications from previous heart attacks.
Her lawyer confirmed the development on Wednesday, that this temporary release was granted based on medical advice regarding her deteriorating health condition.
Despite the release, Mohammadi’s family and supporters have expressed dissatisfaction, arguing that three weeks is insufficient for her recovery. They have called for an extension of her leave to three months, citing concerns over her health and the inadequate medical care she received while incarcerated. The family stated that she is currently unable to walk and emphasized the need for specialized medical treatment in a proper facility.
Mohammadi’s situation highlights ongoing human rights concerns in Iran, where she has been a prominent advocate against capital punishment and women’s rights. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, which was accepted by her children in her absence due to her imprisonment.
