Javed Akhtar takes a jibe at burqa ban

Veteran Bollywood writer Javed Akhtar has recently taken a jibe against Indian women wearing ghunghat offering his views on the recent burqa ban in Sri Lanka.

The burqa ban controversy has recently started in India after the opinion being cited by the Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece Saamna, who has urged Modi government to introduce a ban on burqa following into the footsteps of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has put a ban on wearing a burqa on grounds of national security after the Easter bomb attacks which killed has more than 250 people on 21st April 2019.

As being reported, Javed Akhtar said “Covering face may be a problem when it comes to security. If burqa is banned then, ghunghat too should be taken into account. What is the need of burqa or ghunghat?”

He further added, “If you want to bring a law banning the burqa and if it is someone’s view I have no objection. But before the last phase of elections in Rajasthan, this government should announce a ban on the practice of ghoonghat in that state. I feel that ghoonghat and burqa should go. I will be happy”.

After receiving a severe backlash over his views, the 74-year-old lyricist on Thursday, by taking it to social media tried to clear the air.

In a tweet, Javed Akhtar wrote, “Some people are trying to distort my statement. I have said that may be in Sri Lanka it is done for security reasons but actually, it is required for women empowerment. Covering the face should be stopped whether naqab or ghoonghat.”
