Justice Mussarat Hilali sworn in as a Supreme Court judge

The number of SC judges has increased to 16 out of a total sanctioned strength of 17.

Justice Mussarat Hilali has sworn in as a Supreme Court judge on Friday.

Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial administered the oath to Justice Hilali at the top court in a ceremony that was attended by SC judges, Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan, and members of the legal fraternity.

Justice Hilali, who was the first woman chief justice of the Peshawar High Court, will now serve as the top court’s judge for a period of three years before her retirement.

Hilali was also the first woman to become the CJ of any high court in the country.

With her appointment, the Supreme Court now has a total of 16 judges, with one slot vacant.

President Dr. Arif Alvi on Wednesday appointed Peshawar High Court (PHC) Chief Justice Musarrat Hilali as a judge of the Supreme Court, according to a notification issued from the Ministry of Law and Justice.

The notification said her appointment would come into effect when she takes her oath.
