Karachi Endures Severe Heatwave as Temperature Hits 40°C

Extreme Conditions Expected to Persist

Karachi is currently grappling with a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 40°C, intensifying discomfort across the city.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has reported that the extreme heat, coupled with high humidity levels, is making the weather feel even hotter, with “feels like” temperatures reaching up to 46°C in some areas.

These harsh conditions have persisted for several days, with forecasts indicating that the heatwave will continue at least until tomorrow, June 18.

The heatwave is characterized by low wind speeds and elevated humidity, which have created oppressive conditions, especially during the afternoon hours.

The Early Warning Centre has predicted that temperatures will remain between 35°C and 40°C, with high humidity sustaining the heatwave-like atmosphere through tomorrow.

Some relief is anticipated early next week, as light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to provide respite from the scorching heat.

The ongoing heatwave has severely impacted daily life in Karachi. Power outages have increased due to the surge in electricity demand from air conditioners and fans. At the same time, water demand has also risen sharply as residents strive to stay hydrated and cool.

Outdoor workers, including rickshaw drivers and labourers, face heightened risks of heatstroke, prompting government advisories to reduce work hours and ensure access to water and shade5.

This extreme weather event is part of a broader pattern linked to climate change, with Karachi experiencing a significant rise in average temperatures over recent decades. The city’s dense urban environment, with diminishing green spaces, exacerbates heat retention, making heat waves more intense and dangerous.

Medical facilities have reported an increase in cases of dehydration and heat-related illnesses, underscoring the urgent need for public awareness and preparedness during this prolonged heatwave.

Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak heat hours, remain hydrated, and take precautions to protect vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.
