Karachi facing a severe shortage of tetanus injections

Tetanus ATS injection, which normally costs 50 to 55 rupees, is being sold at ten times that price on the black market.

Karachi is facing a severe shortage of tetanus injections, it emerged on Monday.

The shortage of tetanus injections in Karachi leads to a black market trade, as a result of which patients are facing severe difficulties in the metropolis.

The injection, which normally costs 50 to 55 rupees, is being sold at ten times that price on the black market.

According to the Pakistan Chemists and Druggists Association (PCDA) Senior Vice Chairman Abdul Samad Badhani, some chemists were selling the injection in the black market at about 10 times higher rate.

“Patients are facing problems due to the injection’s shortage,” Badhani said apprising that the injection could not be manufactured for the non-availability of raw materials in the global market.

The main reason for the scarcity and high cost of tetanus injections is that the raw materials are becoming very expensive in the global market, as per the Pakistan Chemists and Druggists Association (PCDA).

Tetanus antitoxin is given as prophylaxis to persons at risk with infected wounds, wounds contaminated with soil or mud, deep or punctured wounds and wounds with revitalising tissue damages.

A dose of 1,500 IU should be given subcutaneously or intramuscularly as early as possible after the wound is received.

As per the health experts, the injection must be administered within 72 hours of the injury, as bacteria could enter the body through various wounds.
