On Saturday, November 30, 2024, the Air Quality Index (AQI) soared to 212, making Karachi the most polluted city globally according to IQAir’s rankings.
This spike in pollution levels is attributed primarily to high vehicle emissions, waste burning, and industrial activities.
The concentration of PM2.5 pollutants in the air was reported to be 27.4 times higher than the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended limits. Although the AQI briefly exceeded the critical threshold of 200, it later dropped to 194, still indicating unhealthy air quality conditions.
The ongoing smog crisis has left residents facing serious health risks, as prolonged exposure to such polluted air can lead to severe respiratory issues and other health complications.
In comparison, Lahore also continues to struggle with severe air pollution, recording an AQI of 240, which is just below the “hazardous” category. This indicates a widespread air quality crisis affecting multiple cities across Pakistan as winter conditions exacerbate pollution levels from various sources.
