Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Seeks Approval for Plasma Immunization to Treat COVID-19 Patients

After Sindh and Punjab have initiated the plasma immunization method to treat COVID-19 patients, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa too has taken the course as the province now has 188 patients of the virus. The method will use plasma cells of recovered Coronavirus patients to treat those who are suffering from the disease and prevent further outbreak.

To further proceed, Hayatabad Medical Complex medical director Prof Shehzad Akbar Khan has written a letter to KP health secretary to form a Provincial Plasma Immunisation Committee and allow the hospitals to obtain the method.

“This has been successfully done in China and New York. The plasma has no side effects on patients but the selection of patients who we will get it from is a scientific process and not all those recovering from the disease are fit for it,” Dawn News reported a member of the committee being formed to overlook the plasma immunization program in the province.

The proposed committee is expected to be headed by Prof Shah Taj Khan of the HMC hematology department and comprising Prof Fazle Raziq of the Rehman Medical Institute, Prof Khalid Khan and Prof Usman Khattak of the HMC, and Dr. Hamida Qureshi of the North West General Hospital, reported the newspaper.
