Maha Kumbh Mela Stampede: Scores Feared Dead Amid Mauni Amavasya Rush
The stampede was reportedly triggered when a barrier broke amidst the tightly packed crowd

The Maha Kumbh Mela, a significant Hindu festival, experienced a tragic stampede early on Wednesday, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
As reported, the incident occurred around 2 AM local time as millions of devotees gathered for the auspicious day of Mauni Amavasya, leading to chaotic scenes at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers.
Initial reports indicate that more than seven people have died, with estimates suggesting the death toll could rise significantly, possibly reaching up to 50. Approximately ten others were injured during the stampede.
The stampede was reportedly triggered when a barrier broke amidst the tightly packed crowd, leading to panic as devotees attempted to escape. Witnesses described a horrific scene where many were trampled in the chaos.
The Indian Rapid Action Force (RAF) was deployed to manage the situation and assist in rescue operations. Emergency medical teams were on-site, transporting injured individuals to nearby hospitals.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath urged pilgrims to avoid the Sangam area and instead take dips at nearby ghats. He emphasized following safety protocols and cooperating with authorities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been actively monitoring the situation and has communicated with CM Adityanath multiple times to ensure immediate support measures are implemented.
The Maha Kumbh Mela is renowned for drawing vast crowds, with estimates of over 100 million attendees expected on this particular day. This year’s festival commenced on January 13 and is projected to attract around 400 million visitors over its duration.
The scale of attendance has raised concerns about crowd management and safety protocols, especially given the historical context; a similar stampede in 2013 resulted in numerous fatalities.
