Both the MQM-P and PTI have criticised the appointment of Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s brother as deputy commissioner of Karachi’s District Central calling it a political move.

MQM leader Kanwar Naveed Jameel also criticised the decision.

In a letter written to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, he has asked him to withdraw the notification appointing Zia.

Jameel cited Clause 1,752 of the Supreme Court Monthly Review, 2013, and Clause 456 of the monthly review of 2015. The Supreme Court has banned the Sindh government from deputing anyone on government posts, he said.

Zia Rehman who has never held a post in Karachi started working in KP as a PTCL division engineer before the 2007 MMA government. During that time the chief minister sent a summary to the governor to circumvent the rules to allow Zia’s appointment in the provincial management service.

From there he was appointed a section officer in Peshawar and moved to the establishment division in 2014. He was also appointed to other important posts later.

According to sources, his appointment was brought up during the last meeting between Asif Ali Zardari and Fazl.
