The 2019 Toronto International Film Festival has announced that the three-time Oscar-winning actress is set to receive the annual cinema event’s first TIFF Tribute Acting Award, which will be presented at the inaugural TIFF Tribute Gala on 9 September at the Canadian city’s Fairmont Royal York hotel.
TIFF co-head, Joana Vicente, in a press statement said “Meryl Streep is undoubtedly one of the most talented and versatile actors of her generation. Her tremendous contribution to cinema, television, and the stage spans five decades;
From her early roles in The Deer Hunter, Kramer vs. Kramer, and Sophie’s Choice to later films including The Devil Wears Prada, The Iron Lady, and The Post, she has portrayed characters that are as compelling as they are timeless. TIFF could not be more thrilled to honor such a skilled and exemplary artist.”
According to the press release, TIFF hopes the new annual ceremony will serve as a significant fundraiser to support its year-round film initiatives while also honoring the prominent industry influencers.
Actor Meryl Streep has most recently won a million hearts with her another stellar performance in the HBO’s insanely popular drama series ‘Big Little Lies’.
The Emmy award winner will also be in Toronto to tout her latest film, Steven Soderbergh’s ‘The Laundromat’, the thriller based on Panama papers, set to receive a North American premiere at the festival.
The 44th Toronto International Film Festival is set to run September 5 to September 15.
