As many as 4,500 employees have been sacked by the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) as part of a cost-cutting practice.
The spokesperson Pakistan Steel Mills said that the lecturers, the non-teaching staff at schools and colleges, drivers, firemen, fire tender operators, health workers, security guards, gardeners, paramedical staff, cooks, and office attendants are being “retrenched”.
The spokesperson said the staff at the chief executive’s secretariat and professional degree holders are all saved.
“The individual letters of retrenchment have been dispatched to all retrenched employees through registered post,” said the spokesperson in a statement.
Meanwhile, the minister for labour in Sindh, Saeed Ghani, while condemning the act of the federal government for the termination of PSM employees said that the Sindh government will stand with the employees.
The provincial minister further demanded that the federal government withdraw its decision to sack the workers and asked for an economic package for PSM to function properly
