MQM-P MNA Dr Mohan Manjiani Resigns
However, the circumstances surrounding his resignation have sparked controversy
Dr Mohan Manjiani, a member of the National Assembly (MNA) from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), resigned from his position on Tuesday, which he held after being elected on a reserved minority seat during the February 8 2024 general elections.
His resignation was reportedly submitted directly to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, following consultations with senior party leadership
However, the circumstances surrounding his resignation have sparked controversy. Dr. Manjiani has publicly denied resigning, claiming that the document submitted to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was not signed by him and suggesting that his signature may have been forged.
He characterized the situation as a “staged and set up” scenario orchestrated by MQM-P and stated that he would pursue legal action regarding the matter.
On the other hand, MQM-P has countered these claims, asserting that Dr Manjiani’s resignation was requested based on intelligence reports alleging his involvement in “illegal and anti-state activities,” including connections to the Indian Embassy in Islamabad.
It was reported earlier in March 2024 that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) suspended the membership of a Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s (MQM-P) member of the National Assembly (MNA) Dr Mohan Manjiani.
The suspension came after Manjiani reportedly tendered his resignation to the ECP; however, the legislator denied resigning and claimed that the signatures on the document were not his.
