Cheema's NA membership reinstated after brief suspension

National Assembly on Friday took action against Tariq Bashir Cheema for ‘violating rules’.

In a disciplinary action, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) member Tariq Bashir Cheema’s membership in the National Assembly (NA) was reinstated following a brief suspension for allegedly abusing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker Zartaj Gul Wazir on the floor.

A day earlier, during a debate on the presidential address during the assembly session, Cheema got angry when PTI leader Iqbal Afridi interrupted his speech.

This led to heated exchanges between Cheema, Afridi and Gul.

Tariq Bashir Cheema lost his temper as Gul, during his speech, kept referring to the Islamia University of Bahawalpur scandal.

Cheema’s “inappropriate” remarks against Gull enraged the PTI lawmakers as they moved to the treasury benches to grab him but he was rescued by the MNAs from the ruling alliance.

The enraged opposition members tried to go to the government lobby as well, forcing the speaker to call security to avoid escalation.

When the situation became tense, the speaker adjourned the session till Friday morning.

However, In the NA speaker’s direction, Cheema tendered an apology to Zartaj Gul Wazir, which she accepted. Leader of the Opposition Omar Ayub Khan thanked the speaker for his role in the matter.

Zartaj Gul Wazir said that she had forgiven Cheema as per the decision of her party’s leadership.
