In a significant move to combat misinformation and anti-state activities, the government has blocked 86,000 SIM cards.
The update was revealed by Parliamentary Secretary Sajid Mehdi during a session of the National Assembly on Wednesday.
This action is part of a broader initiative aimed at curbing the spread of fake news on social media platforms.
Responding to concerns regarding the proliferation of false information online, Mehdi disclosed that access to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has also been restricted. These measures are designed to limit the avenues through which misinformation can spread.
To further strengthen the fight against fake news, amendments to the Electronic Crimes Act are anticipated. Mehdi emphasized that these changes will enhance existing regulations and provide law enforcement with better tools to address this pressing issue.
In addition to blocking SIM cards and restricting social media access, the government has limited the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) in an effort to control the dissemination of false information. A dedicated task force has been established under the Prime Minister’s directive to tackle fake news, with awareness campaigns being launched in educational institutions across the country.
Highlighting the unique challenges faced by Pakistan, Parliamentary Secretary Mehdi noted that while misinformation is a global issue, it often does not receive the same level of scrutiny in other countries, allowing for greater freedom of expression.
As part of these intensified efforts, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cybercrime Wing has been officially empowered to take action against social media offences, following a notification from the Ministry of IT. This comprehensive approach underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by misinformation and safeguarding national security.
